Equipment Used: Canon 30D, Tamron SP-AF 17-50mm f/2.8 with Polarizer, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM with Moose 81A Polarizer, also Cokin P-Series filter set; P028 warm, P120 GND, P121 GND were used together, interchangeably, with either lens. Dynatran AT-858BL Tripod with ATH-918 grip action ball head.

The silica-rich waters of the spring kill surrounding trees, which are quite literally in the process of becoming petrified wood as the silica replaces the cells of the tree.

Approximately 370 feet in diameter and 121 feet deep, Grand Prismatic Spring is Yellowstone's largest hot spring, and the third largest hot spring on Earth (New Zealand contains the two larger springs).

  • The run off streams from the Grand Prismatic hot spring are extremely colorful. Many of the colors come from microorganisms called "thermophiles" that live in the hot waters.
  • Yellow-colored organisms grow and mix with the natural blue color of the water to add a green fringe on the inside edge of the pool. Orange-colored bacteria then form the dense orange mats that run out on all sides of the pool.
